Twitter responds to leaked username and password allegations

Two-factor authentication is the best defense against password theft.

Twitter has acknowledged that numerous Twitter usernames and passwords are available for sale on the dark web, however, the company says it is confident that its own servers haven't been breached, and that the leaked information may have been amassed from other recent breaches, or malware on victim machines that are stealing passwords for all sites, or a combination of both.

Regardless, Twitter says that it is "acting swiftly to protect your Twitter account." As a result, a number of Twitter accounts have been identified for extra protection. Accounts with direct password exposure have been locked and will require a password reset by the account owner.

For your own safety, Twitter also recommends turning on login verification (two-factor authentication).
