Twitter may increase the character limit for tweets to 10,000
Twitter is looking to increase the character limit for tweets.
According to Re/code, several sources claim that Twitter is considering a new feature which allows users to post tweets longer than 140 characters. Known internally as "Beyond 140", Twitter is said to be looking at a launch towards the end of Q1.
Learning from its past mistakes of adding more content or bigger pictures which led to lower user engagement, Twitter is testing an interface where tweets will display 140 characters and have a call-to-action button for users to click to view more. In doing so, Twitter can maintain the look and feel of the timeline for its users.
Twitter is also looking to potential issues arising from expanded tweets such as spam. Potential workarounds can include limiting the number of users mentioned in a tweet. The company is scheduled to meet its analytics and measurement partners later this month to discuss about longer tweets.
Increasing the character limit for tweets may be seen as going against one of its most established product features, but Twitter is running out of solutions to increase user growth. We recently explored some possible reasons behind user stagnation on Twitter, so give it a read if you're interested.
