Toshiba Announces The World's Largest Capacity Non-Helium HDDs

Late last year, we reported that Hitachi has began shipping 6TB hard disk drives by exploiting the use of helium in the drives. Helium, being less dense, offers less resistance and turbulence to the spinning platters, allowing manufacturers to cramp more platters in the enclosure.

Not to be outdone, Toshiba has just announced 5TB hard disk drives. Though smaller in capacity than Hitachi's, these drives are not filled with helium, and as such, are the industry's largest non-helium gas filled drives. This is achieved using 1TB platters.

Sample shipping of these drives - dubbed the MG04 series - will begin in the second half of this month and will be available in a 3.5-inch form factor and support the latest SATA 6Gbps interface.
