Toshiba has just released the world's first 3TB portable external hard disk drives. Toshiba first announced them at CES 2015 earlier this year, but it was not until recently that they finally went on sale. These new 3TB drives can be found in Toshiba's Canvio Basics and Canvio Connect II lineup.

Toshiba's latest drives are not to be confused with 4TB drives like the Seagate Backup Plus and Western Digital My Passport Pro, which use two 2TB drives to achieve their 4TB capacities. These new Canvio drives consist of a single hard disk drive.

The Canvio Basic is, as its name suggest, a basic portable external hard disk drive that is great for anyone who is looking to expand the storage of their devices. On the other hand, the Canvio Connect II comes with remote access capabilities, cloud backup and the ability to share and stream content. It also offers smartphone and tablet users a simple solution to back up their content remotely.

The drives will use the USB 3.0 interface and are available in a variety of colors. The 3TB Canvio Basics is available in black and white; while the 3TB Canvio Connect II comes in black, white and satin gold.

The drives will be available at all major IT retailers from next month onwards.
