Toshiba Announces 8-inch Windows 8.1 Encore Tablet (Update: Hands-on Photos)

Toshiba Announces 8-inch Windows 8.1 Encore Tablet

Toshiba has unveiled the Encore tablet today, an 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet with a 1200 x 800 pixel resolution multi-touch display, powered by an Intel Atom processor.

"Encore is poised to re-energize the opportunity for Windows tablets in the market,” said Carl Pinto, vice president of marketing, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. “Our fundamental approach to designing Encore was to create a better convergence of hardware and software so the overall app experience and capabilities on a Windows-based device is better than ever. Windows has a lot to offer for a tablet user, and with the new features that Windows 8.1 brings, we believe that Encore will deliver more choice against a range of competitive tablets.”

The tablet is billed as being both slim (at 10.68mm) and light at 479g. For comparison, this makes it slightly thinner and lighter than the only other 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet currently available, Acer's Iconia W3, which measures 11.4mm and weighs 500g.

The Encore will have up to 64GB of internal storage and will include similar connectivity: micro-USB 2.0 port, micro-HDMI port and a microSD slot for up to 64GB more storage. Other specs include 2GB RAM, dual cameras (2MP and 8MP), stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus. It will also ship with a full version of Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013.

The Toshiba Encore tablet will be available in the US in November for US$329.99, which makes it slightly pricier than the US$299 W3. Local availability has not been announced yet.

The Toshiba Encore has an 8-inch screen with a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels.

It has one micro-USB 2.0 port, one micro-HDMI port, a headphone/microphone combo jack, and a single microSD card slot.

The Encore tablet is 10.68mm thick, with a starting weight of 450g.
