Swiss watchmakers who once dismissed smartwatches as a passing fad are now out in full force to get in sync with the times. The Swatch Group, the world’s biggest watchmaker, has just announced the Tissot Smart-Touch, the first proper smartwatch from the watchmaker since the rather niche Bellamy and Touch Zero One from last year.

The Tissot Smart-Touch is actually based on the outgoing T-Touch Solar, and allows users to connect the watch to their smartphone and other external services like weather stations.

One of the standout features is the ability for you to pair it with your phone and combine the watch’s compass capabilities with the phone’s navigation and GPS features. This means that you can use the watch’s hands and screen to navigate, with the dial offering directions and other tracking information from your phone. A separate Smart-Touch FindIt accessory fob can be attached to various items and then tracked by the watch.

In addition, there is something called the Smart-Touch Station, which is supposedly a small solar-powered weather station that can offer highly localized weather information like temperature, humidity, and air quality to both the Smart-Touch watch and the smartphone app.

Of course, there are also the typical smartwatch functions, such as automatic time and date updates. However, the most convenient aspect of the Smart-Touch is probably the fact that it does not require regular charging or battery changes. In fact, Tissot says that the battery can last up to a year on a single charge, and that it can be recharged using solar power.

All in all, Tissot has created a smartwatch with quite a handful of novel features. It doesn’t offer the full range of functionality that other smartwatches do, but it manages to be something quite unique altogether with its weather tracking and navigation features.

The Tissot Smart-Touch will retail for between US$1,100 to US$1,200.
