These are the Mobile Phone Award winners for Sony's World Photography Awards

The winner of the first Mobile Phone award at the Sony World Photography Awards 2015 has been announced, and it is Italian photographer Turi Calafato. This is his winning shot, followed by the 2nd and 3rd place winners by Janos M Schmidt from Hungary, and Ako Salemi from Iran, respectively.

The 2nd place winner by Janos M Schmidt, Hungary

The 3rd place winner, by Ako Salemi of Iran.

The Mobile Phone category was introduced to recognise the increased accessibility mobile phone cameras have given photographers, and it was open to photographers of all abilities. The 20 finalists were compiled by a panel of judges, who included Chris Hudson, Group Art Editor, National Geographic Traveller, UK, Evgeny Tchebotarev, CPO and Co-Founder, 500px, Canada, as well as myself. The public then voted on their favourite image.

Personally, Calafato's photo wouldn't have been my first choice, but his image was the overwhelming favourite, with 6,000 more votes than the image in 2nd place. No disrespect meant to Calafoto, he is an accomplished photographer in his own right, with several awards and exhibitions under his belt.

What do you think of the winning shots? If you think you have a shot at winning (no pun intended), why not keep your eyes out for the Sony World Photography Awards next year and submit your own mobile phone photograph!
