That's right, iPad Pro won't get Office apps for free

When Apple announced the new iPhones earlier this month, they also unveiled a new 12.9-inch tablet iPad called the iPad Pro.

According to Apple, the iPad Pro was designed specifically for productivity and will feature Apple's new A9X processor that is powerful enough to edit three streams of 4K video simultaneously.

Since last year, Microsoft has made the mobile version of its Office apps free, allowing users to view files and documents and giving them access to "core editing" functions. Some features and functions are behind a paywall, but by and large, most users will be able to get some basic editing done.

However, the free version of Office is available only to devices that are 10.1-inch and smaller. Clearly, the iPad Pro exceeds this requirement and Microsoft has recently confirmed that the new iPad Pro will indeed not able to use Office for free. As a result, iPad Pro owners wishing to use Office must get an Office 365 subscription - Office 365 Personal starts from S$98 a year.

This was what Microsoft said:

Office on the iPad Pro will require an Office 365 subscription for any and all editing. That’s because Microsoft defines a 10.1 inch cutoff. Anything below 10.1 inches is a “true mobile device” and as such qualifies for free access to the core editing capabilities. But above that threshold and it’s not a “true mobile device” any longer, it’s something else entirely, and it will need an Office 365 subscription as a result …
