Synology has launched the DiskStation DS216j, an entry-level NAS solution designed to be an affordable option for home users. It joins other NAS systems in Synology’s DiskStation DS216 series of products, including the DS216, DS216+, and DS216play, where each of these cater to a different type of user, ranging from small businesses to power users at home.

The new two-bay DiskStation DS216j serves the purposes of home media streaming, in addition to file-sharing and backup. It will appeal to home users who want a reliable and power-efficient home server that will not require them to break the bank. In fact, Synology says that the DS216j consumes only 6.95 watts while it is hibernating.

Compared to the older DiskStation DS215j, the DS216j features a new dual-core Marvell Armada 388 6820 1.0GHz CPU and two USB 3.0 ports (its predecessor only had USB 2.0). It also boasts a built-in floating point unit to speed up thumbnail processing for a better experience while browsing photos, and 512MB of DDR3 RAM.

There is also support for Chromecast, MiBox, and even Apple TV, which means users can enjoy the new DS Video app on Apple's tvOS.

However, as a budget solution, it lacks certain features like hot-swappable drives, support for the Btrfs file system, and a hardware transcoding engine for things like real-time 1080p H.264 video transcoding.

The DiskStation DS216j is already available worldwide. It retails locally for about S$252.
