The smartwatch space will have a new entrant next year when long-term partners Swatch Group and CSEM release their unique Swiss-made ecosystem which includes an OS designed from the ground up.

According to EE Times, both companies announced last week that they are working on a unique Swiss -made ecosystem for smartwatches and other connected devices. The ecosystem consists of an operating system dubbed Swiss OS which focuses on data protection, ultra low power consumption and durability. Smartwatches running the Swiss OS are expected to be available in 2018.

Unlike its counterparts in the consumer space, the Swiss OS does not require regular updates. Other elements of the ecosystem include integrated circuits for data processing and transmission, and development tools. Both companies claim that this is the first holistic approach used for connected devices.

The latest development marks a renewed focus on smartwatches for the Swatch Group. As the world's biggest watch maker, the Swatch Group saw its profits declined by 47% and revenue dropped by 11% last year. It released its first proper smartwatch, the Tissot Smart-Touch last year.
