The Surface Pro 4 is the best tablet Microsoft has ever built

Update: Our Surface Pro 4 review is out! Find out if it lived up to our expectations.

15 months since the Surface Pro 3, Microsoft has today at a Windows 10 devices event in New York City announced its direct successor, the Surface Pro 4.

Like its predecessor, the Surface Pro 4 is positioned as a tablet that can replace your laptop. Featuring Windows 10 Pro, a 6th-gen Intel Core M, Core i5, or Core i7 processor, and a 12.3-inch PixelSense Display, the Surface Pro 4 is the thinnest Surface Pro tablet Microsoft has ever built.

Here’s a rundown of its specs, courtesy of Microsoft:

While the Surface Pro 4 looks rather similar to the Surface Pro 3 before it, it's in every way a better tablet. It's thinner, lighter, faster; and amazingly, Microsoft even manages to pack an even larger and higher-res display (12.3 inches, 2,736 x 1,824 pixels). According to Microsoft's Panos Panay, the Pro 4 is 50% faster than the Apple MacBook Air. Battery life for video playback is pegged at nine hours.

With improved display and inking technologies, the new bundled Surface Pen is also more accurate and responsive. Additionally, it has a tail eraser, all-year battery life, and magnets within to attach to the side of the tablet, thus getting rid of the need for a pen loop on the cover. Then there's the new Surface Pro 4 Type Cover, with its more spaced-out key set and a glass trackpad that should make for a more comfortable and faster typing experience.

Prices for the new Surface Pro 4 start at US$899 (that's for the 128GB, 4GB RAM, Core M3 model). (Update: Local availability details!)
