With Steam Greenlight, Community Members Choose Which Games Get Distributed

Games distribution service Steam will be launching a new system in August to decide which games will see the light of day. Steam Greenlight will allow community members to select the games that they want to see released on Steam. Game developers will reveal information, screenshots and other forms of media for their games, and the community will support those games they deem to be of interest.

Working in tandem with Steam Workshop, which lets customers organize and leave feedback for games, Greenlight will not only help in deciding which games make it on Steam, but also provide valuable feedback to game developers. Looking to further involve their customers in the selection process, the announcement on the Steam website acknowledged that how well a game sells really depends on their customers.

"The community should be deciding what gets released. After all, it’s the community that will ultimately be the ones deciding which release they spend their money on."
