StarHub's 2-in-1 Line service enables two active numbers on one SIM card at the same time

Many people we know (especially business people) carry two phones with them all day, one for work and one for play, with each having its own number. To reduce the hassle, some have switched to a dual-SIM phone; but for the many who didn't (typically because their favorite phone doesn't have a dual-SIM variant), the usual practice is to carry the additional SIM card with them (often in their wallets) and swap it with the one in the phone as and when there's a need to.

Now, if only there’s a service that allows you to tag two active phone numbers to a single SIM card and phone. Guess what, that’s exactly what StarHub has just announced with its 2-in-1 Line service.

In a nutshell, StarHub’s 2-in-1 Line value-added service lets you easily get and manage an additional mobile number right on your smartphone via its 2-in-1 Line app that’s now available on the iTunes App Store and Google Play. The first such service in Southeast Asia, it has a monthly subscription of S$5.35 (inclusive of GST); but if you were to sign up before December 31, 2014, you get three months of subscription free. In addition, you also get to enjoy unlimited local SMS until the end of the year.

To be clear, the second line that you get from this 2-in-1 Line service allows you to make and receive calls and SMS messages, just like your primary line. In other words, both numbers are active at the same time. The main difference is that to make calls using the second number, you need to go through the app first, which would then fire up the phone’s native dialer (this step isn’t required for receiving calls). Sending and receiving of messages using the second number are also done through the app. Needless to say, the number of minutes and SMS messages you can use on the second line count towards your primary line bundle.

Regarding roaming however, StarHub’s 2-in-1 Line FAQ page states that while you can still receive calls outside of Singapore, you can't make outgoing calls. Both sending and receiving of SMS messages overseas are possible.

Besides initiating calls and managing SMS, you can also use the 2-in-1 Line app to manage other cloud-related features, including a voicemail inbox with personalized greetings, comprehensive call filtering/blocking options, and a separate mobile address book and call/text logs. The latter is especially important for those who wish to keep their work and personal lives separate.

How to sign up

To subscribe to StarHub’s 2-in1 Line service, a one-time activation is required and you can do that through this webpage: http://bit.ly/2in1LINE. StarHub actually recommends that you activate the service before you download the app, login with your Hub ID, and use the service. This service is also restricted to StarHub Mobile postpaid voice and data customers without a MultiSIM plan. If you aren't sure if this service is useful to you, we recommend that you take advantage of the free three months subscription to try it out first. But you need to remember to cancel it (which can be done through the app) if you don't wish to continue after the three months, as you'll be charged automatically thereafter.
