StarHub's 1Gbps fiber broadband plan returns, now costs S$69.90 per month

Updated on Dec 18, 2014: StarHub has confirmed with us that it's 1Gbps fiber plan is a symmetric plan, which means 1Gbps download and 1Gbps upload limits.

A while back, we discovered that StarHub has removed mention of its 1Gbps fiber broadband plan on its website. We approached StarHub, and a spokesperson admitted that the telco hasn’t been actively selling this plan recently. At the same time, we were assured that this removal is only temporary.

Well, if you’re looking to sign up a 1Gbps plan from StarHub, we’ve some good news. The plan is now back, and it’s more affordable than before. Now called Dual Broadband 1,000, it will be available for sign-up beginning November 22 online at www.starhub.com/broadband, or by visiting any StarHub Shop or authorized dealer.

To be specific, Dual Broadband 1,000 is a home Internet fiber broadband plan with a theoretical 1,000Mbps maximum download speed and 500Mbps 1,000Mbps maximum upload speed. (We’ve asked StarHub, and were told that typical download speed range is 541.9 - 913Mbps.) Versus the previous monthly price of S$395.90, the new plan costs just S$69.90, a huge drop.

That above being said, we were also told that this S$69.90/month subscription fee is a limited time offer, which will return to S$99.90/month after the promotional period. We’ve asked when the promotion will end, and were only told that this rate will be valid till further notice.

For reference, M1 has recently dropped the price of its 1Gbps plan to S$49/month to go head-on with MyRepublic’s 1Gbps offerings (which start at S$49.99/month). SingTel’s Unlimited Fiber plan, which offers 800Mbps typical download speeds, is going for S$69.90/month. And lastly, ViewQwest’s revised 1Gbps plan is now going for S$89.95/month.

To make its plan stand out from the rest, StarHub is offering a 100Mbps cable connection to go along with the 1Gbps fiber connection. This dual-network package is similar to the S$59.90/month Dual Broadband 500 plan that the telco first introduced in May, which packs an additional 100Mbps cable broadband connection with a 500Mbps fiber broadband connection.

And that’s not all. Dual Broadband 1,000 customers will also get to receive two free wireless networking devices as a limited-time launch promotion, one of which being the S$319 D-Link DIR-868L dual-band wireless-AC router. The plan also bundles StarHub TV Lite (16 channels and a set-top box) for free. Last but certainly not the least, in line with other ISPs’ high-end plans, StarHub will not be doing peer-to-peer traffic management for this Dual Broadband 1,000 fiber broadband plan.
