StarHub Mobile Customers to Enjoy Clearer Voice Calls with HD Voice

StarHub today announced that it is the first telco in Singapore to complete the upgrade of its 3G mobile network with High Definition (HD) Voice, which will deliver better sound quality for local voice calls.

HD Voice is a wideband audio technology that allows more speech information to be sent over the air, resulting in clearer mobile voice calls with reduced background noise. This is part of StarHub's ongoing efforts to improve its mobile networks.

StarHub will be switching on HD Voice next Thursday, 7 March 2013, widening the speech bandwidth across all its 3G mobile base stations. It is noteworthy to mention that HD Voice is a free service and does not consume any data.

However, two requirements are to be met in order to enjoy HD Voice. Both the caller and receiver need to be subscribers of StarHub's new SmartSurf plans (SmartSurf Lite, SmartSurf Value, SmartSurf Premium and SmartSurf Elite) and use HD Voice capable devices.

HD Voice will be progressively enabled for customers on other mobile plans by Q3 2013. There are a total of 19 HD Voice capable devices that StarHub is carrying. Some of the models are:

  • Apple iPhone 5
  • BlackBerry Z10
  • LG Optimus G
  • Samsung Galaxy Note II LTE
  • Samsung Galaxy S III LTE
  • Sony Xperia Z

*Update as of 6.49 pm: BlackBerry Torch 9810, LG L5, L7,L9, Optimus 4X HD, Optimus Vu, Nokia Lumia 610, Lumia 900, Lumia 920, Sony Xperia Sola, Xperia Go, Xperia V and Xperia Z are the other phone models that support HD Voice.

As HD Voice is appearing as a standard feature in new smartphone models, you can look forward to selecting from a wider range of models. High quality international mobile calls on HD Voice handsets will be possible in the near future as there is a growing number of telcos around the world which are committed to rolling out HD Voice commercially.

StarHub conducted a trial HD Voice conversation with us last Friday, where we experienced the sound quality of a normal call and a HD Voice call. We found the HD Voice conversation to be indeed clearer and background noise was significantly reduced. We've reached out to StarHub on the complete list of handset models that support HD Voice. We will update this section when we have the information.
