Spotify Plans to Make Mobile Streaming Free

When Spotify came to our shores, we gave it a thorough and extensive try and found out that the service is actually extremely good. If rumours are to be believed, Spotify may just be becoming an even more attractive proposition.

As it stands right now, Spotify can be downloaded gratis for use on your desktop or notebook. But if you want the internet enabled music streaming service on your tablet or smartphone you have to pay the S$9.90 monthly subscription service. This model is similar to competitors such as Deezer.

However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Spotify is ready to roll out a free version for their music streaming service on mobile devices.  The catch? The new free version is expected to be ad-supported and will also limit the number of on-demand songs a user can request. Information pertaining this cap has not been made available. From the looks of it, the radio feature of Spotify will form the core of the free mobile experience

This new development has been made possible after Spotify was able to agree deals with the relevant content producer. When the change happens, Spotify  would move into direct competition with services such as Rdio, Pandora and iTunes Radio. The free version of Spotify for mobile is expected to be released sometime later this week.
