Special Edition Leica M (for Red) Designed by Jony Ive & Marc Newson Revealed
The special edition Leica M digital rangefinder camera designed by Apple's Senior VP of Design Jonathan Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson has been revealed, but you probably won't be getting one.
The one-of-a-kind camera will go on auction at Sotheby's on November 23rd for a good cause, the proceeds will go towards (RED), the charity founded by Bono to help fight HIV and AIDS. It will come with a Leica APO-Summicron M 50mm f/2 ASPH lens, but we have a sad feeling this gorgeous camera won't be seeing much use once sold.
Inside, the Leica M (for RED) is exactly the same as the 24MP, full-frame Leica M. But the outer body features a laser machined aluminum body and an anodized aluminum outer shell - like what you'd get if you mashed an expensive digital rangefinder together with a MacBook Pro. The Leica M (for RED) doesn't sound like it was designed in a weekend, true to legends of Jony Ive's obsession for details, the final design apparently took 85 days and more than 735 hours to make, with more than 550 models and 1000 prototypes tested.
