More companies are now focusing their efforts on developing better battery technologies and Sony is the latest brand to do so.

According to Nikkei, Sony is reportedly working on a new battery based on sulfur compound which is able to deliver 40% more charge than the current lithium batteries. In addition, the new battery is said to be able to deliver similar battery life as lithium batteries in a 30% smaller form factor. To put this into perspective, an Apple iPhone 6s equipped with Sony's new battery could offer four more hours of web browsing.

Although electrodes dissolve into the electrolyte with every charging cycle faster in sulfur-based batteries, Sony was able to overcome this issue by reformulating the electrolyte solution. This opens up the possibility of seeing smartphones with thinner designs yet better battery life in the future. At the moment, consumers have to wait until 2020 before the new battery technology reaches the mainstream market.

We've also seen how other companies develop innovative battery technologies. Apple is said to be interested in British company Intelligent Energy's hydrogen fuel cell which can make an iPhone last a week on a single charge. Huawei developed a prototype battery that can recharge to half capacity in just five minutes while Samsung's new batteries for smartwatches can boost usage times by 50%. NTU researchers developed new lithium batteries that can charge to 70% in two minutes!
