Sony, the world's biggest image sensor supplier, has unveiled its latest Exmor RS image sensor, the IMX318.

Touted as the industry's first stacked CMOS image sensor with built-in hybrid autofocus, the 22.5 megapixel 1/2.6 size IMX318 sensor is capable of focusing on a subject as fast as 0.03 seconds for photos and 0.017s for videos at 60fps. It also boasts 3-axis electronic image stabilization technology, which allows for smooth 4K video recording at 30fps. Below are two videos showcasing these features in action:

The IMX318 also sports the industry's smallest unit pixels at 1.0μm (micrometers). While a larger pixel size can capture more light and delivers better low-light photos, Sony claims the IMX318 is still able to deliver high quality images thanks to its manufacturing technology that improves light utilization efficiency and circuit design technology that minimizes noise. Below is a comparison between two photos taken by the IMX318 (right) and IMX230 (left):

With plans for shipment of the IMX318 in May 2016, you can expect the image sensor to appear in smartphones, aerial drones and other consumer products in the second half of the year.
