More than a year after it unveiled the SmartBand, Sony Mobile today announced its successor - the SmartBand 2.

The second generation SmartBand comes with an optical heart rate sensor that works together with the accelerometer to track your pulse and heart rate variability. The data collected will then be used to gauge your overall fitness, excitement and stress levels.

Like most fitness trackers, the SmartBand 2 is able to automatically tracks physical activities such as walking and running with the Lifelog app keeping a database of your workouts. In addition, it has IP68 waterproofing which means you can wear it underwater (fresh water) up to 3 metres for as long as 30 minutes.

The SmartBand 2 also doubles as a sleep tracker and has a smart alarm function which gently vibrates to wake you up at the best time based on your sleep cycle. Similar to the predecessor, the SmartBand 2 has pulsing LEDs to alert you of incoming calls, messages, emails or tweets. Using simple taps, you also can control music playback on your phone or tablet. Having said that, the SmartBand 2 works with both Android and iOS devices; Android 4.4 KitKat or higher, and iOS 8.2 or higher.

Sony claims the SmartBand 2 is able to last up to 2 days on its 58mAh battery. At launch, the SmartBand 2 will be available in black and white, with pink and indigo coming shortly after. Worldwide availability is slated for September with an estimated retail price of 119 EUR (~S$187).
