Sony Struts Waterproof Xperia Z2 with Ultra-HD Video Recording Capability & Mid-Range Xperia M2

Sony has unveiled new premium product additions to build on last year's portfolio, at the Mobile World Congress. Taking center stage is the new waterproof Xperia Z2; the latest addition to the premium Z series features a new enhanced video mode that captures, and preserves memories in detailed 4K resolution. Also announced is the Xperia M2 smartphone that offers blockbuster entertainment and flagship experiences at a mid-range price point.

[It seems that Sony's waterproofing everything these days. Prior to this announcement (and barely a couple of weeks ago), the Japanese tech titan showed off its new cable-free mp3 player's waterproof ability in its "The Bottled Walkman" video, which featured its impermeable NWZ-W270S Walkman.]

Sony's best premium waterproof smartphone to date merges the brand's best mobile camera, and its most advanced camcorder ever, in an 8.2mm thin body. Its 20.7-megapixel camera is matched with 1/2.3-type Exmor RS for mobile CMOS image sensor, Sony G lens, and intelligent BIONZ for mobile image processing engine, resulting in superior photo and video quality. With the new enhanced video mode, you can now capture memories in sharp 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160/30p) at four times the detail of Full HD. Also, SteadyShot image stabilization technology will ensure your footage stays fluid even if you're on the move.

Besides Info-eye, Social live, and Timeshift burst, Xperia Z2 also comes pre-loaded with new Xperia camera apps for both photo and video:-

  • Timeshift video lets you shoot in 120fps, and select scenes to slow down playback speed for dramatic slow motion effects exactly where you want, even underwater
  • Creative effect is available in real-time for video, and enhances your clips with a range of effects such as colors, image trails, mirror, and motion effects
  • Background defocus camera app simulates a shallow depth of field; capture two photos at different focus settings and blend together the different depths for more professional-looking photos
  • AR effect offers new augmented reality animations, including sound effects for videos
  • Vine videos can be created from your camera's viewfinder; you can capture Vine videos underwater using the dedicated camera button as well

Plus, there’s a whole range of extra apps for you to enjoy including Wikitude Places, Evernote, VI Sports and more. Simply go into your camera viewfinder, tap the camera mode icon and then click on ‘+Apps’ to see all the latest apps available on Sony Select.

Evolving Sony's OmniBalance design by having the glass panels encased in a single, solid aluminum frame with smoother edges, this dust-resistant and waterproof (IP55 & IP58) powerhouse's 5.2-inch Full HD TRILUMINOS display for mobile with Live Colour LED provides a broad palate of rich natural colors for crisp images, and a viewing experience that's as close to reality as possible. Sony's intelligent super resolution technology, X-Reality for mobile, analyzes each image to optimize colors, sharpness, and contrast, while also reducing noise.

The Sony Xperia Z2 sports slimmer bezel than its predecessor. The LG G2 seen on its right has an ultra thin 2.65mm bezel.

Driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.3GHz Quad-core Krait CPUs and 4G LTE, the Xperia Z2 runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat platform, and houses a large 3,200mAh battery along with its Battery STAMINA Mode. The SmartBand SWR10 (more on this later) works with Xperia Z2 to log your life in partnership with the Lifelog application, creating an automatic 24/7 diary of your activities, entertainment and memories. You'll never need to worry about losing your phone or missing a call with a series of customizable smart notifications delivered straight to your wrist.

You'll also be entitled to an exclusive content offer that includes six blockbuster movies from Sony Pictures, including Captain Phillips, through the Video Unlimited service as well as 30 days free trial of the Music Unlimited service and a range of PlayStation Mobile games.
