Sony Set to Announce A7 and A7R E-mount Full-frame Mirrorless Cameras

Update: Thanks to DigiCame-Info, we now have a clearer look of the A7 and A7R full-frame mirrorless cameras from Sony. The first image above shows the A7R with the Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 prime lens. The second image shows the A7 with the 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 kit zoom lens.

The Sony E-mount debuted in the Sony Alpha NEX-3 and NEX-5 mirrorless cameras in 2010, and has since been used in the company’s interchangeable lens camcorders and mirrorless cameras. For a while now, many people have deemed the E-mount unsuitable for use with a full-frame sensor (due to the short flange-back distance), but according to SonyAlphaRumors, Sony is looking to change this with the launch of the Sony Alpha A7 and A7R as early as this week, both of which are E-mount-based mirrorless cameras with a full-frame sensor.

According to SonyAlphaRumors, the A7 has a 24-megapixel sensor, while the A7R has a 36MP sensor. The former will supposedly do on-sensor phase-detection AF and has an anti-aliasing filter; the higher-res A7R doesn’t do on-sensor PDAF and omits the AA filter. However, like the other E-mount cameras, the A7 and A7R don’t do in-body, sensor-shift image stabilization. But both are weather-sealed and support eye-tracking AF, Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, and focus peaking. Size-wise, they’re in the ballpark of the Olympus OM-D series, and it’s possible to attach a vertical grip. Also, they’ve a built-in high-res OLED EVF and their rear LCD monitor is tiltable. Unlike the NEX-7, they don’t use a Tri-Navi navigation system, though both still sport front and back control dials.

The A7 is expected to be priced at US$1,698, with the zoom kit (that comes with a 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 lens) priced at US$1,998. The A7R is said to cost US$2,198 for just the body only. Four Zeiss lenses (24-70mm f/4, 70-200mm f/4, 35mm f/2.8, 55mm f/1.8) are also expected to be announced at the same time.

Cyber-shot DSC-RX10

Continuing on the success of the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and RX100 (and now, the RX1R and RX100 Mark II), the rumor now is that Sony going to launch an RX10 alongside the aforementioned full-frame E-mount cameras.

Again, according to SonyAlphaRumors, this RX10 premium compact would have the same 1-inch sensor as the RX100 series. It’d also come with a fixed 24-200mm f/2.8 lens.
