Sony’s updates its smallest full-frame camera – introducing the RX1R II

*Updated November 20th 2015*  Pricing and availability information added

The Sony RX1R II delivers the highest quality of any Sony compact camera ever made (and quite possibly the highest of any compact camera currently in the market) with a new 42.4-megapixel sensor paired with a ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens that has been specifically tuned to optimize the sensor.

What’s interesting is that Sony is introducing the world’s first optical variable low pass filter in the camera, allowing you to choose just how much resolution to eke out of the sensor. Three settings are available – “off”, “standard” and “high”, and you can even do low pass filter bracketing, which is definitely a first. Here's a video to explain how the optical variable low pass filter works:

The RX1R II gains a 42.4-megapixel full-frame sensor.

Also new, is the retractable XGA OLED viewfinder for eye-level shooting. Where the previous models required you to purchase an additional hotshoe viewfinder, the RX1R II has one built-in, inherited from the RX100IV. Unlike with the RX100 IV though, the optics can be used without having to pull out the rearmost optics, making it more user-friendly.

Additional notable features include uncompressed 14-bit RAW still image capture, up to 5 fps continuous shooting with AF bracketing and a 3.0 inch WhiteMagic 1.2 million dot LCD display that tilts upwards up to 109 degrees and downwards up to 41 degrees, allowing for greater flexibility in shooting angles.

The inclusion of a tilting LCD will give photographers more flexibility in shooting angles.

Dpreview reports that the camera will not be able to record 4K video, but will rather do Full HD and 720p at 120 fps. 14-bit uncompressed RAW is an option, and it seems the camera also gets the hybrid AF system from the A7R II that comes with 399 phase-detection AF points.

The RX1R II will be available in November for about $3,300 US at a variety of Sony authorized dealers in America, but no announcement has been made as to when the camera will be released to the rest of the world.

*Update (November 20th 2015)*
