Sony’s updated WS623 Walkman brings Ambient Sound for situational awareness

Night joggers and weightlifters rejoice, because Sony just launched the WS623 Walkman. This audio wearable is designed for sports and the outdoors, thanks to its weather-proofing and Ambient Sound feature.

The WS623 Walkman shares the same design as the preceding models with its neck band form factor and built-in 4GB storage for songs. It works wirelessly with Bluetooth and NFC support, making it easy to pair to your playlist on your mobile device. To accommodate sports use, it’s salt waterproof, dustproof, and sweatproof. Its IP65/IP68 waterproofing allows the athlete to swim with the WS623, to a depth of 2 meters with up to 30 minutes of submerged time.

A new and noteworthy feature is Ambient Sound, where the Sony WS623 Walkman uses integrated microphones that can pick up on external voices and environmental audio cues from your surroundings. This is handy when you want to have music on while receiving instructions from your fitness trainer or spotter, or when you need to listen out for fast-moving vehicles during a late-night jog.

The wearable can last up to 12 hours one full charge, and it can provide 60 minutes of audio with a quick three-minute charge. It is available mid-May 2017 at S$199 across authorized retailers. They come in Lime Green, Blue, Grayish White, and Black.
