Sony reports strong sales of PS4 and image sensors, but mobile business on the decline

Sales of Sony Xperia devices continued to decline in the second quarter of its financial year.

Sony just announced the financial results for Q2 of fiscal 2015 which saw the company make a big turnaround after years of losses and restructuring.

In the three months to September, Sony made US$280 million in net profit which is a stark contrast to the same period a year ago where it experienced a heavy loss. Two business units, the Devices and Gaming, contributed the most.

The Devices section, which includes the lucrative image sensor business, reported a 16% increase in operating profit to US$272 million with sales of US$2.2 billion. The company recently announced that it would be acquiring Toshiba's image sensor business as it anticipates further market growth.

The best performing unit goes to the gaming section where sales reportedly increased by 16.5% and led to an operating profit of US$199 million. The PlayStation 4 software sales contributed US$3 billion in revenue.

As expected, the mobile business continued to lose money with operating loss of US$172 million. Sales dropped 15.2% year-on-year as a result of the company's "strategic decision not to pursue scale in order to improve profitability". Despite the poor performance, Sony Mobile has no plans to exit from the mobile business and will continue to focus on delivering a better user experience in its phones.
