Sony photographers rejoice, uncompressed raw files are coming to a7S II and a7R II.

Sony’s a7R II is rocking an insane 42MP sensor, but so far it’s been crippling that high resolution at the knees by only offering lossy compressed files for saving in raw. While lossy compression helps save disk space, DP Review has gone in-depth and discovered that the compression can have a negative impact on some images.

Well, it looks like Sony has been listening to users baying for the full image quality they paid for, as the company has announced that the upcoming a7S II camera will come with an option to save in uncompressed 14-bit raw, and it will offer firmware updates for existing cameras like the a7R II to do the same. No word yet on which other cameras will get the same firmware update, or when exactly the update will drop.
