Sony Mobile rumored to be developing own processors, may debut in 2016

The Sony Xperia Z5 series are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processors.

Sony Mobile is rumored to join the ranks of Apple, Huawei and Samsung in developing its own mobile processors.

According to DigiTimes, industry sources claim that Sony Mobile is following in the footsteps of its competitors to develop its own processors. This would allow it to increase earnings and market share. LG is also said to be following a similar strategy although the Korean company had been rumored to be doing so since 2013.

Apparently, Taiwan-based IC design service provider Global Unichip has secured application processor orders from Asia-based phone makers. In addition, the sources claim that current chip makers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek could see a drop in revenue next year as phone makers develop in-house processors.

Aside from Sony Mobile and LG, Xiaomi is also alleged to be developing its own processors for release in early 2016. Huawei has designed its own chipsets since 2012 and is reportedly optimizing its upcoming chipset for use with its own mobile OS.
