In an aggressive move to increase its presence in classrooms, Sony has introduced nine (yes, nine) new 3LCD-based short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors in its S series lineup, offering up to 8,000 hours (ultra-short-throw) or 10,000 hours (short-throw) of lamp life, and color brightness from 2,600 to 3,200 lumens. To keep cost of ownership down, they come with several environmentally-friendly features, such as an Eco mode that automatically dims the brightness after 10 minutes if the input signal is static.

To be more specific, there are four new short-throw models, the VPL-SW235, VPL-SW225, VPL-SX235, and VPL-SX225. Like the five new ultra-short-throw models, the VPL-SW630, VPL-SW620, VPL-SX630, VPL-SW630C, and VPL-SW620C, these are a mix of WXGA (1,280 x 800) and XGA (1,024 x 768) projectors. Expectedly, their short-throw characteristic makes them suitable for places where space is a premium (e.g., smaller classrooms and meeting rooms), since they're capable of throwing high-resolution images up to approximately 2m diagonal across onto a whiteboard, wall, or any white surface from a distance as close as 44cm (XGA, ultra-short throw).

Of the nine new projectors, the VPL-SW630C and VPL-SW620C stand out with their enhanced interactivity features, which include dual pen and auto calibration, and additional rich education tools, making it easier for students and teachers to collaborate effectively in the classroom. All the new models in the S series can also be connected wirelessly via a PC (Windows or Mac) or tablet (iOS or Android).

The new S series short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors will be available in the Asia Pacific region from June 2014. For those interested, the VPL-SW630C will be showcased at iCTLT (International Conference on Teaching and Learning with Technology).
