Sony to Focus on Imaging in its Next Flagship Phone

Sony to Focus on Imaging in its Next Flagship Phone

The K770i is one of the several Cybershot phones during the era of Sony Ericsson.

The Apple iPhone 5, HTC One and Nokia Lumia 920 are some of the most impressive camera phones in the market, but they will soon be eclipsed by Sony's upcoming Cybershot flagship phone.

UnwiredView claims in a report that Sony is releasing a Cybershot phone, the Xperia i1 this fall. Codenamed Honami, the device will come with the following specs:

  • 5-inch Full-HD display with Triluminos technology
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.3GHz processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16-20 megapixel camera with 1/1.6-inch sensor and Xenon flash
  • Battery capacity of between 2700 to 3000mAh
  • Water and dust resistance
  • 10mm thin chassis

Triluminos technology is a new display technology developed by Sony. Using nanocrystals or quantum dots to show information, these crystals are able to emit light at a precise preset of wavelengths. This will lead to an overall improvement in brightness, contrast and richer colors.

For comparison's sake, the Apple iPhone 5 has a 1/3.2-inch BSI CMOS sensor and the HTC One has a 1/3-inch BSI CMOS sensor. The Nokia 808 PureView and Lumia 920 have sensor sizes of 1/1.2-inch and 1/3.2-inch respectively.

Sensor size is one of the reliable indicators of image quality besides advances in sensor technology and image processing. You can find out more in our articles on the HTC One's UltraPixel Camera and the Nokia 808 PureView

The addition of a Xenon flash is also welcomed as it can be up to 10 times brighter than any flash in current camera phones, thus bringing low-light photography to the next level.

Low-light photography emerged as a talking point when Nokia unveiled its Lumia 920 last year. It seems that HTC and Nokia are going to face tough competition from the upcoming Sony Cybershot phone when it arrives.
