Sony debuts the Xperia XZ with triple image sensing technologies

Updated on 4th September 2016: New information on the phone's 5-axis stabilization feature has been made known and we've updated the news below with the details.

Welcome the new Xperia XZ with a range of striking colors and an all-metal back.

What do you get when you smash an Xperia X and Xperia Z? That's right, the Xperia XZ and it's Sony's highest performing device in the their new Xperia X series of smartphones.

Xperia Z was all about premium design and build and while the Xperia X modernized it with improved aesthetics, better battery life and an improved camera, there was still something not quite complete about their line-up. Never mind the fact that the Xperia X was Sony Mobile Singapore's top new phone which sported only a mid-range processor and had no water/dust resistance.

While the Xperia X Performance looked the part and had all the rest of the specs boxes ticked, we really think the new Xperia XZ with ALKALEIDO metal finish (from Kobe Steel) really brings the design appeal of the phone to the next level. Even the form of the device has been slightly updated with a nice rounded feel that should be comfortable to hold. Speaking of handling, the phone's display is a 5.2-inch Full HD display, so it's only marginally larger than their existing crop of Xperia X devices.

A close-up shot of the Xperia XZ. Like the rest of the devices in the X series, it will also use a USB Type-C port.

And just like the Xperia Z devices before it and the Xperia XA, the new Xperia XZ is back to boasting dust and water resistance for hassle free handling.

Design aside, the other key focus is the phone's imaging prowess. Still using the same 23MP rear camera sensor, it combines it with two others - a laser AF sensor for distance sensing and an RGBC-IR sensor for color sensing. Combined, Sony calls it their triple imaging sensing technology to analyze and capture the perfect shot even in the most challenging conditions. We would love to put their claims to the test, but the phone will only be available in October.

Last but not least, Sony claims that the Xperia XZ is the first smartphone to adopt a 5-axis image stabilization system to nail a steady and focused shot under any condition. Previously, Xiaomi's Mi 5 held the record with a quad-axis image stabilization system, but it looks like Sony has upped the game somewhat. We say somewhat because there's a fineprint to this new image stabilization system - the 5-axis stabilization feature is only available in Full HD video resolution. And it is only activated only when the camera recognizes macro video; other situations will be recorded as 3-axis (pitch/yaw/roll) only.

As expected of a top tier phone, it uses a Snapdragon 820 processor with 3GB of RAM for its processing needs. The rest of its specs are as follows:-
