Sony to consider alternative options for mobile business if no profits in 2016

The Xperia Z5 smartphone lineup will determine whether Sony Mobile will turn profitable next year.

2016 will be a critical year for Sony Mobile as the company continues the restructuring process.

According to Reuters, Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai claims that the mobile business will continue as long as it is "on track with the scenario of breaking even next year onwards". If it fails to do so, Hirai said that the company hasn't eliminated the consideration of alternative options.

Reuters - "We will continue with the business as long as we are on track with the scenario of breaking even next year onwards," Hirai told a group of reporters on Wednesday. "Otherwise, we haven't eliminated the consideration of alternative options."

While restructuring in the company has seen improvements in other businesses, the mobile business has yet to show any results. In fact, Sony recently lowered its initial estimate of ¥39 billion loss to ¥60 billion in this fiscal year for the mobile business.

Reuters - "Restructuring of the mobile business is progressing as planned, and we are aiming to turn profitable in the next fiscal year. As of now, we have no plans to withdraw from the mobile business," he told Reuters.

Sony Mobile CEO Hiroki Totoki told Arabian Business in July that the company “will never ever sell or exit from the current mobile business.” Totoki is relying on the new range of Xperia Z5 smartphones to get back in the game against the onslaught of Apple's iPhones and other Android flagship smartphones.
