Sony to be the third battery supplier for the Galaxy S8?

To prevent history from repeating itself, Samsung has added a third battery supplier for its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphones. The Wall Street Journal learns that Samsung will be using lithium-ion battery packs from Sony.

Just two weeks ago, the Nikkei business daily claimed that Samsung was discussing a deal with Japan's Murata to supply batteries for the Galaxy S8. Murata will replace Amperex, which is one of the two suppliers for the faulty batteries in the Galaxy Note7 last year.

The success of the Galaxy S8 is critical for Samsung as it tries to recover from the fall-out of the Galaxy Note7 crisis last year. This could have forced Samsung to play it safe by having more battery suppliers.
