Sony announces the release of the Smart B-Trainer, an all-in-one training device

At first glance, the Smart B-Trainer looks like any of Sony’s exercise-themed Walkman devices (the NWZ-W273S Limited edition comes to mind), with a non-slip neckband-style housing for greater freedom of movement.

Look deeper though, and you’ll find that this is one head-set that’s packed with features. First off, is the SSE-BTR1, a headphone-integrated device that comes with a heart rate sensor, an accelerometer, GPS, compass, gyro and barometer. With these six sensors, the Smart B-Trainer is able to measure and record 11 types of logs: heart rate, burned calories, distance, time, speed, pace, cadence, steps, stride, running route and elevation.

Create a user profile and set heart rate goals; the Smart B-Trainer will automatically select music that will suit the exercise necessary to reach those goals using Sony’s 12 Tone Analysis technology. If your heart rate goes above the selected speed, the Smart B-Trainer will automatically switch to a song with a slower tempo, thus subtly guiding you to slow down. The reverse also applies, and of course, you also have the option of manually adjusting the tempo of songs to suit your mood while exercising.

The Smart B-Trainer comes in a selection of five colors.

Pair the device with its companion Smart B-Trainer for Running app, and you’ll be able to manage your running logs on your smartphone. The app also provides a selection of training plans so you can choose the one that best fits your goals. Simply send the plan to the Smart B-Trainer via Bluetooth and you’re ready to start on your personalized workout plan immediately.

Two sets of training plans are available to start – Basic and Premium. The Basic plan offers a range of options to allow you to set running goals for the day, such as time, distance and pace, as well several theme-based training plans like “efficient fat burning” or “to improve endurance”.

The Smart B-Trainer is waterproof so you can even run with it in the rain.

The Premium training plan on the other hand, offers training plans with a selection of levels of difficulty from walking all the way to running a marathon. These are designed by professional coaches so it’s just like getting professional coaching firsthand, with voice prompts during warm up, training and cooling down.

There’s also integration with the MY ASICS Training Plan where you can create a personalized training regime on the MY ASICS webpage by entering your details and selecting an appropriate phase. After you’ve completed the program, send it over to the Smart B-Trainer to view the results and to compare how you did against the last workout.

The Smart B-Trainer has an in-built memory of 16GB, an IPX5/IPX8 waterproof rating, and an in-built microphone so you can even use it to make calls. It’s available in a choice of yellow, white, blue, pink and black, and will be available at selected Sony authorized dealers from 11 June onwards for S$399.
