Sony announces launch of four Full-frame E-mount lenses and two teleconverters

Sony has just announced the launch of four new Full-frame α E-mount lenses and two sets of fisheye and ultra-wide converters to cover both Full-frame and APS-C cameras.

Zeiss Distagon T* FE 35mm F1.4 ZA (SEL35F14Z) Full-frame Wide-angle Lens

Featuring Zeiss glass for uncompromising performance, the new Zeiss Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA looks set to give the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art a run for its money. The SEL35F14Z features 9 aperture blades for smooth bokeh, and boasts corner-to-corner sharpness thanks to the use of aspherical elements (including one Sony Advanced Aspherical element)and a Zeiss T* coating that suppresses flare and ghosting.

A Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) system allows for quick, whisper-quiet autofocusing, and the aperture ring can move from smooth continuous operation to one that offers click-stops, allowing you to select the mode that works best for your current task. What’s more, the lens is dust and moisture resistant, so you can go ahead and film or take stills outdoors without having to worrying about the weather.

FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS (SEL90M28G) Full-frame Mid-telephoto Macro G Lens

The E-mount line-up’s first mid-range telephoto macro features Optical SteadyShot (OSS) image stabilization, allowing for pin-sharp images handheld; crucial when doing macro work at 1:1 magnification.

An Internal Focusing mechanism ensures that your lens doesn’t inadvertently protrude into your subject, while the smooth and quiet Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) drives two “floating” focus groups independently, allowing for the extremely precise adjustments you need when doing macro photography.

There’s also a focus hold button to allow you to focus and recompose easily, and a sliding focus ring that lets you easily switch from autofocus to manual on those occasions where you want to take absolute control.

FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS (SEL24240) 10x Full-frame Zoom Lens

Here’s a super telephoto for E-mount shooters who want to just carry one lens. The FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS is an excellent option for travelers, with an advanced linear motor that drives quick, accurate focusing throughout the zoom range.

The inclusion of five aspherical elements and one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) element ensures excellent optical performance, while the built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS) image stabilizer should help compensate for extreme telephoto and low-light shots.

FE 28mm F2 (SEL28F20) Full-frame Wide-angle Prime Lens

A good wide-angle lens always has a place in a photographer’s kit, and the FE 28mm f/2 should fit in nicely with its small and light body. The lens weighs just 200g, and has a diameter of 64mm, with a height of just 60mm; ticking all the right boxes there.

High-grade aluminum finishing adds visual appeal, while the 9-blade circular aperture makes for smoother bokeh effects. Three aspherical elements (including one Advanced Aspherical element), and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements ensure excellent sharpness, while multi-coating on the surfaces helps to fight against flare and ghosting.

Ultra-wide and Fisheye Converters

Also available are ultra-wide and fisheye lens converters for Full-frame and APS-C cameras respectively. The SEL075UWC Ultra-wide Converter and SEL057FEC Fisheye Converter fit on the FE 28mm f/2 perfectly, increasing the viewing angle to 21mm or 16mm (with 180o coverage) respectively. The SEL075UWC Ultra-wide Converter has a max aperture of f/2.8, while the SEL057FEC Fisheye Converter goes to f/3.5, but what’s interesting is that both lenses will generate their own EXIF data, so you’ll have no issues sorting out which lens took the shot later.

Likewise, the VCL-ECU2 Ultra-wide fits the SEL16F28 16mm F2.8 and SEL20F28 f/2.8 APS-C lenses bringing the SEL16F28 to 12mm and the SEL20F28 to 16mm respectively. Finally, the VCL-ECF2 Fisheye Converter brings an exaggerated perspective effect to the two lenses, bringing a full 180 degree field of view to the SEL16F28 and a wide 133 degrees to the SEL20F28.

With the exception of the SEL24240 Full-frame Zoom Lens which was released yesterday at RRP of S$1,369, pricing for the other lenses has yet to be announced, but all the lenses are expected to be available by the end of the month.
