Sonos sound systems will support Amazon’s Alexa voice-control in 2017

Come 2017, new and existing Sonos owners will get sound systems that are compatible with Amazon Alexa voice control services.

The voice control utilizes existing music capabilities of Sonos and Alexa, which means that the voice-control will recognize familiar commands, such as playing songs from a choice of Amazon Music, Spotify, and more. The integration was collaboratively built from scratch through the use of Alexa Voice Service SDK.

The new voice control capabilities will be installed over a software update, and it applies to both new and previously purchased Sono and/or Alexa-enabled devices (such as the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, and Amazon Fire TV). Both Sonos and Amazon will start the voice-control support with an invite-only beta, before making it available at large in 2017.

“Our mission is to fill every home with music,” said Sonos president, Patrick Spence. “We don’t care what you listen to, how you get to it, or in what room—we just want it to be effortless, quick and epic. Alexa on Sonos will be all that, and fun too.”

Sonos also extended its software integration abilities by improving existing features. Come October 2016, a software update will allow the Spotify app to fully control a Sonos sound system – a first for Sonos since full-control was generally reserved for the Sonos app alone. This allows people to connect to your Sonos sound system via Wi-Fi, and playing music directly from their Spotify playlist on your speakers without the need for the Sonos app.
