The days of physical home buttons with fingerprint sensors are numbered as another company successfully developed an ultrasound biometric sensor that is integrated with glass for use in mobile devices.

Sonavation, a company specializing in ultrasound biometric technology, today announced that it has successfully developed and bonded an ultrasound biometric sensor which is compatible with Corning Gorilla Glass. According to Sonavation, its ultrasound biometric sensor can deliver high resolution 3D fingerprint images to "a level of identification and authentication security that up until this time has not been possible".

Like Qualcomm's Sense ID technology, Sonavation’s touch sensor under glass technology is not affected by moisture, dirt or oil. Sonavation also touts the cost-saving benefit of its touch-under-glass technology where phone makers can eliminate the expensive process of cutting a hole in the glass to fit a biometric sensor.

While Qualcomm states that its 3D fingerprint scanner technology should be available in consumer devices later this year, there is no word from Sonavation when its technology will hit consumer devices. Apple is rumored to be working on a virtual home button with fingerprint scanning feature for future iPhones.
