Skype for Web lets you connect to the service right in the browser

Not content with just having Skype apps for virtually all desktop and mobile platforms, Microsoft has announced a beta version of Skype for Web. Essentially, it allows you to use the audio and video-calling service right in your desktop browser.

Great for connecting to Skype on computers that don’t have the app installed (think PCs in an Internet cafe), to start chatting using Skype for Web couldn’t be any simpler: simply sign in on Skype.com. Skype for Web works on Internet Explorer and Chrome on Windows, as well as Firefox and Safari. If you’re already a Skype user, upon sign in, you also get to see all your contacts and latest conversation history. Until WebRTC arrives though (and it will), you’ll need to install a plug-in before your first conversation.

Microsoft is currently making Skype for Web available to a small number of existing and new users, before a wider rollout in the coming months. You can look out for an invite when you sign in to your Skype account on Skype.com.
