Although Apple increased the storage capacity of the iPhone last year and that of the iPad this year, it is still not keeping pace with the increase in file sizes of the popular apps.

Based on Sensor Tower's analysis of App Intelligence, you now need about 1.9GB of storage space for the top 10 most installed iPhone apps in the U.S. Four years ago, you only need 164MB. This translates to a 12x or an estimated 1,100% in just four years! If you are wondering what are the top 10 most installed apps, they are:

  1. Snapchat
  2. Uber
  3. Gmail
  4. Messenger
  5. Facebook
  6. YouTube
  7. Netflix
  8. Google Maps
  9. Instagram
  10. Spotify

One explanation for the explosive app size growth is the fierce competition between these apps, which require the companies to roll out new and advanced features which require more storage space. This can also be seen in gaming apps; Candy Crush saga grew about 4.6x from 43MB to 223MB over the same period of time.

Taking into account the rapid growth of app file sizes, it is recommended that you future-proof your purchase of an iPhone or iPad by opting for a higher storage model.
