SingTel today launched Easy Mobile, the first postpaid mobile service in Asia that allow users to customize their mobile plans every month to suit their needs.
Available for new line subscriptions only at launch, Easy Mobile provides users the flexibility of tweaking the talktime, SMS and data bundle via the MySingTel app or the Easy Mobile online portal. With a few clicks, users can sign up for an Easy Mobile plan, choose a handset, mobile number, optional service add-ons and even arrange for a free home delivery service.
There are four Easy Mobile plans to choose from: Small, Medium, Large and XLarge. Each plan comes with a set allowance of units that can be allocated for voice calls, SMS and data. One unit represents 50 minutes of outgoing local calls or 500 local SMS/MMS or 0.5GB of local data usage.

If you choose the $45 Medium plan, 10 units can be used in any combination for voice, SMS and data bundle. For example, you can allocate 6 units (3GB) for data and the remaining 4 units distributed between voice and SMS/MMS. The plan requires you to place at least 1 unit in either of the three services.
What if you anticipate that data usage will go up next month? You can reallocate up to 8 units (4GB) for data, 1 unit (50 minutes) for voice and the remaining 1 unit for SMS/MMS. Alternatively, you can upgrade your Medium plan to Large which has more units at your disposal. You can then allocate up to 12 units (6GB) for data and the rest of the 4 units for voice calls and SMS/MMS. Do note that tweaking and upgrading of plans can only be done for the following month.
Compared to the existing SingTel's Plans with Data Bundle (Lite, Value, Plus and Prestige), we find the Medium and XLarge plans from Easy Mobile to be better deals for consumers who have less need for SMS/MMS. In the comparison above, we tried to match the talktime and data bundle offered by the current plans (Value and Plus) with the units offered by Easy Mobile plans (Medium and XLarge).
With the Medium plan that offers you up to 10 units for dynamic allocation of your services, you can get pretty good savings if your data usage on a monthly basis is below 2.5GB and you have no need for more than 500 SMS/MMS. Even if you were to exceed your data usage by 1GB, you would still save $4.20 even if you have to pay the excess charge of $10.70 per GB.
For heavy users, the XLarge plan will give you a total of 26 units for just $105 per month. Compared with the the current Plus plan, the new XLarge Easy Mobile subscription seems to offer more bang for your buck for just $5.10 more per month. If you allocate your units for both outgoing call minutes and SMS/MMS to be on-par with the Plus plan, XLarge will give you 3GB more data for just $5.10 more per month. Compared to current Plus users, exceeding data by 3GB would've incurred extra charges of up to $32.10.
Besides giving you the flexibility of customizing your own mobile plan, Easy Mobile is also more convenient as it uses digital platforms to handle all transactions and your needs including post-sales support. There is no need for you to call the hotlines, fill out forms or visit the retail outlets. In addition, there are self-help tools to monitor your real time usage and compare against your chosen allocations.
Easy Mobile plans will be available for existing SingTel mobile customers to renew their contracts in the coming months. They can register their interest at the Easy Mobile website to receive updates on the availability of Easy Mobile.
