Singtel today announced major upgrades to its 4G and Wi-Fi networks that will enable customers to enjoy faster mobile surfing speeds and improved connectivity. As of today, Singtel is the first telco in Southeast Asia to offer a tri-band 4G network with LTE-900 on a commercial basis.

The upgrades also mean that Singtel customers will get better mobile coverage while indoors. According to Singtel, it has invested heavily over the past year to improve the quality and extent of mobile coverage, with a focus on boosting reception indoors. The telco has also enhanced coverage in zones that have previously suffered from poorer coverage. This move comes after local telcos – Singtel included – said that they would halt 2G services by 2017 and repurpose the existing 2G spectrum to improve 3G and 4G services

The best part of this is that you likely already own a phone that can take advantage of the improved speeds. Popular handsets launched in the last two years are good to go, and Singtel is looking to expand its upgraded service to over 400 sites across the island by March 2016. This means that data surfing while indoors – including MRT tunnels – is only set to improve for Singtel customers.

Parkway Parade will be the first mall to enjoy the better coverage, followed by eight other major shopping malls by this October. Punggol and Sengkang residents can also look forward to enhanced 4G coverage in their estates by October.

Furthermore, Singtel announced a partnership with Samsung to launch a handset that will fully support tri-band 4G+ in the coming months (could this be the Galaxy S6 edge+ or Note 5?). With access to all three spectrum bands, the new handset could reach surfing speeds of up to 337Mbps.

To cap it all off, Singtel has signed an agreement with McDonald’s to equip 123 outlets across the island with Singtel Premium Wi-Fi, a Wi-Fi bundle that is offered with its Combo plans. The service will first be offered at McDonald’s at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, Nex, and Causeway Point, and the rollout is expected to be completed by the first half of 2016. In lieu of the new Wi-Fi service, Singtel is also extending free unlimited access to Premium Wi-Fi for another four months to end November, after which Combo plan customers will have 2GB of Wi-Fi access per month.
