Singtel, Sony Pictures Television, and Warners Bros. join forces to create new video streaming service

Because Netflix isn’t officially in this part of the world (the nearest are Australia and New Zealand, and that’s happening in March), many have resorted to VPN or DNS routing services to get to its video content. Sensing the enormous opportunity, the just-rebranded Singtel, Sony Pictures Television, and Warner Bros. Entertainment have gotten into a joint venture and established HOOQ, an over-the-top (OTT) video service for Asia.

According to Singtel’s press release, HOOQ will carry over 10,000 movies and television shows initially. There will be Hollywood movies and U.S. TV series, as well as Indian, Chinese, Thai, Filipino, Indonesian, Korean, and Japanese movies and TV series. Users can either stream or download them to their devices, and the service will support different platforms. Expectedly, Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros. Entertainment will supply titles, as well as provide access to their premium content and know-how.

The HOOQ video streaming service will be rolled out progressively to countries that the Singtel Group has presence in (including Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Thailand) from the first quarter of 2015.
