SingTel Rolls Out 300Mbps 4G Service, Offers 4G Roaming in China

The battle for 4G supremacy in Singapore hits a new level as SingTel today announced it is the first telco in the country to roll out live 4G service that is capable of offering data speeds of up to 300Mbps. It is also the first local telco to offer 4G data roaming in China.

The 300Mbps 4G service is now available at Singapore Expo. SingTel states that more than half of the island will be covered by the end of the year, which will include areas such as the CBD, Changi Airport and popular shopping malls. Nationwide coverage is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

Although the 300Mbps 4G service is free for SingTel 4G subscribers, there is currently no device in the market that can support it. The first compatible device, the Huawei E5786 MiFi dongle, will be available from SingTel in mid July. Smartphones and tablets are expected to be available soon after.

Rumored devices such as the HTC One (M8) Prime and Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime are said to support this service, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor which comes with the 4th generation Gobi MDM9x35 LTE modem.

As for 4G data roaming in China, SingTel 4G subscribers can enjoy unlimited data usage via China Mobile at just S$20 per day. China is the latest addition to the list of seven other countries (Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea and Switzerland) that support SingTel's 4G data roaming service.

At launch, the service is available for the Apple iPhone 5S and 5C smartphones, which are currently the only handsets that are compatible with the 4G mobile frequencies used by China Mobile. Other smartphones will be supported in the coming months.
