Singtel launches Singtel Newsstand, offers leading news publications and data-waived usage

Earlier this month, Singtel launched Cast, an on-demand video streaming service for its postpaid mobile users. Well, if you prefer reading than watching movies, dramas, and variety shows, Singtel has today announced another new service called Singtel Newsstand.

To put it simply, Singtel Newsstand is both a print and digital newsstand, offering leading international and local newspapers and magazines for Singtel postpaid mobile customers. Titles are offered at special rates (up to 20% off regular rates), and best of all, mobile data that you use on the publications’ apps and websites won’t be counted against your local mobile data allowance. Subscription fees are charged to your monthly bill.

So, what are the publications we’re talking about here? At launch, Singtel Newsstand offers The Wall Street Journal, Time, and Fortune. Singapore’s largest local newspaper, The Straits Times, is also onboard. Some publications like Fortune and Time offer digital-only as well as digital-and-print options, while some like The Straits Times and The Wall Street Journal are digital-only. According to Singtel, it’s working hard to add more titles to Singtel Newsstand, and titles launching soon include The Economist and The New York Times.

To sign up, you can head over to newsstand.singtel.com. Sign ups can also be done through the My Singtel app, at any Singtel Shop, or over the Singtel hotline (1688/1609). After signing up, you’ll be able to access all subscribed titles via the publishers’ own websites and apps.

In case you’re wondering the extent Singtel is going to waive data charges for Singtel Newsstand, this FAQ provides a clue. Singtel states that local mobile data charges are waived when you browse articles, stream videos, or download any PDF from the partner publications’ apps and websites on your mobile device. That said, since Singtel has limited control over third-party ads, videos, pictures, and links that pop up in the publications’ apps and websites, you may incur charges on these external data. Also, note that local mobile data charges are only waived for the mobile number subscribed to Singtel Newsstand; unless you use multi-SIM, data charges still apply if you access the content on another device.

Last but not least, as Singtel Newsstand’s device partner, Samsung will offer free three months subscription (worth up to S$98) with every 12-month Singtel Newsstand contract. Customers who purchase Samsung mobile phones from Singtel from now until June 30, 2017 are eligible for this promotion.
