Google has announced plans to build and operate FASTER, a high-speed internet Trans-Pacific cable system. The $300 million project will be completed by the second quarter of 2016, with Google, China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, KDDI, and SingTel jointly managing the project. NEC will be on board as the system supplier. FASTER will connect the US with Chikura and Shima in Japan, and will also connect to other neighboring cable systems so that other Asian countries can also benefit from FASTER. The system will run the latest 6-fiber-pair cable and optical transmission technologies, making the system's estimated capacity to be 60Tb/s.
