Singtel and Ericsson to trial live LTE broadcast and voice over Wi-Fi calling

Singtel has just announced that it will partner Ericsson to undertake trials of LTE Broadcast and voice over Wi-Fi calling. According to Singtel, it believes this will help improve the video and voice calling experience of its customers in Singapore in the future.

Singtel and Ericsson will take advantage of the upcoming 28th SEA Games to begin the first trial of video delivery using LTE Broadcast. The SEA Games will take place from June 5 to June 16 in Singapore.

Based on Ericsson's Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) solution, LTE Broadcast will enable a virtually unlimited number of mobile users in densely populated areas to simultaneously stream high quality live broadcast videos to their mobile devices. The trial hopes to showcase the commercial viability of this technology for businesses in Singapore.

LTE Broadcast aside, Singtel and Ericsson will also conduct Singapore's first voice over Wi-Fi calling trial. Voice over Wi-Fi will allow users to make voice calls using  their home Wi-Fi or public Wi-Fi networks. This will extend the coverage of Singtel's mobile services.

Tay Soo Meng, Singtel's Group Chief Technology Officer, had this to say about the upcoming trials: "We are committed to enriching the lives of our customers by transforming the mobile-broadband user experience and providing superior video and voice services. Our customers will soon enjoy high quality video content with LTE Broadcast, and seamless voice service continuity between local Wi- Fi access points and the 4G network."
