Singapore students take home awards at Intel ISEF science competition

Three Singapore students from National Junior College took home awards from the 2016 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Sponsored by Intel, the ISEF is a competition for high school science research held by the Society for Science & the Public. The 2016 edition hosted more than 1,700 young scientists from 77 countries, regions and territories.

The top winners this year were Austin Wang, 18, from Vancouver, Canada, Syamantak Payra, 15, from Texas, USA, and Kathy Liu, 17, from Utah, USA.

The three students from Singapore to win awards were Wang Yuhang, 19, Shu Yi, 19, and Sim Yu Ki, 17.

Wang received the Third Award in the Chemistry category for his project Nickel Oxy-hydroxide Thin Films as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Dye Wastewater Treatment. Wang found an electrochemical method for treating dye wastewater which is cost and energy effective, as well as energy efficient.

Shu received the Fourth Award in the Chemistry category for his project Immobilization of Glycans on Silicon Substrates for Diagnostic Microarrays, and Sim was awarded an Honorable Mention from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for her project Early, Affordable and Rapid Viral Detection: Revolutionizing Home Diagnosis of Dengue and Zika through Lateral Flow Biosensing.
