Local app developer Clean Shaven Apps has won an Apple Design Award at WWDC 2017 for its super slick currency converter app Elk.

Clean Shaven Apps was founded in 2012 by two local app developers, Hon Cheng and Junjie. Hon Cheng is most famous for his bus transport app SG NextBus, while Junjie’s first app was the popular reminder app Due.

Their first app together was Dispatch, an action-based email app that lets users act quickly on emails while on the move.

Elk was born from the frustration of not being able to find an intuitive and simple to use currency converter app for traveling.

Most currency converter apps are concerned with precise conversions, whereas most travelers only really need a rough estimate of currency conversions.

Elk is refreshingly simple and quick to use.

Elk is optimized for watchOS

Hence Elk doesn’t allow for precise currency inputs. Instead, users are shown currency conversions in fixed denominations (in multiples of 10s, 100s, etc), which can be quickly adjusted by swiping left and right. To see conversions for amounts in between, simply tap the screen. It’s a quick and elegant solution to getting currency conversions while abroad.

As a result, Elk is supremely optimized for the Apple Watch. Conversions can be quickly obtained simply by turning the Digital Crown and swiping on the Apple’s Watch display.

Elk is available on the App Store as a free 14-day trial. After the trial, users who find the app useful can continue using the app by paying S$5.98 to unlock all currencies.
