Microsoft has introduced a new and more luxurious keyboard for the Surface Pro 4. Dubbed the Signature Type Cover, the keyboard could be Microsoft’s way of making the Surface Pro 4 more competitive against the growing competition, which includes the likes of the Apple iPad Pro, the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S, and even the Huawei MateBook.

The Signature Type Cover keyboard stands out because of its unique covering, which is actually made from a high-end Italian fabric called Alcantara. In case you’re wondering, this is the same material that is used on the ear pads of headphones like the Sennheiser HD800.

It’s clear that the central focus of the new keyboard is its design, with Microsoft describing the material as “a beauty to hold and behold”. Well, that may be, but it remains to be seen if there’s been any improvement in the actual typing experience. The original Type Cover keyboard is already pretty good, but things like further key travel are always a nice bonus.

The Signature Type Cover costs US$159.99 on Microsoft’s US store. It is only available in a single-color that Microsoft is referring to as two-tone mélange and will work with the Surface Pro 3 as well.
