Sigma has just launched the world’s first 20mm f/1.4 lens

The 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is a beautifully crafted wide-angle lens.

Specifically designed to eke the most out of today’s ultra-high-megapixel DSLRs and ILCs the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art has been built incorporating a large double aspherical lens 59mm in diameter using technologies the company developed during the production of other wide-angle lenses such as the Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG Aspherical HSM and the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art.

With 15 elements in 11 groups, the 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art uses two FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) elements and five SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements to minimize transverse chromatic aberration, allowing the lens to deliver high image quality without color smearing. This helps the lens render sharp images with high contrast, while the Super Multi-layer coating applied helps to minimize flare, ghosting, and surface reflections leading to greater color accuracy.

A look at the internal construct of the 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art.

The minimal distortion means that the lens is ideal for landscapes, interiors, and architecture, while the wide aperture means you can also use it for environmental portraits with the subject in focus and the background blurred with a bokeh effect, made even more attractive thanks to the nine-blade, rounded diaphragm.

The implementation of Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) allows for silent, high-speed autofocus while full-time Manual Focus means you can adjust focus for optimum precision at any time without even having to flip a switch. Also, Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) compound material has been used in the construct, reducing the size and weight of the lens, as well as allowing for better performance at extreme temperatures thanks to limited thermal shrinkage.

As with all recent Sigma lens releases, the 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art will be compatible with the Sigma USB Dock, so you can really fine-tune your individual unit for optimum precision. The Sigma 20mm f/1.4 Art will be available in late November 2015 for Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sigma SA cameras with a price tag of US$899.
