A recent report has revealed that shipments of hard disk drives fell nearly 17% in 2015.

The last time shipments fell this much was back in 2012 when hard disk drive manufacturing facilities in Thailand were hit by a terrible flood.

One of the key reasons for this drop is because of the proliferation of SSDs. Prices of SSDs have fallen dramatically in recent years, to the point where a gigabyte of SSD storage now costs lesser than 50 cents.

Apart from cost, SSDs have been increasing in capacity as well. 500GB and 1TB SSDs are now common place, and this is often more than enough storage for most people.

As a result, more consumers and even brands are turning to SSDs. Today, most notebook makers are using SSDs in place of HDDs for their compactness, performance and power efficiency.

Despite this, it's not all gloom and doom for hard disk drives as they are still cheaper overall than SSDs and are useful for applications where performance is non-critical. In addition, the report also adds that sales of HDDs for enterprise use still remains strong.
